Walking Tour of Umbria Italy Detailed Itinerary:


Day 1 –Welcome to Assisi –The Home of Saint Francis


After you have met your guide and checked in at your accommodation you can take some time to explore the city of Assisi known throughout the world as the birthplace of Saint Francis. You can wander through the medieval streets lined with Umbrian craft shops and delicatessens and visit the spectacular Basilica of Saint Francis with its frescoes by Giotto.


Day 2 –Assisi to Spello –In the Footsteps of Saint Francis 


On the first day of your walk you will follow the ancient paths taken by Saint Francis and his followers through the peaceful Monte Subasio regional park passing the Eremo degli Carceri where Saint Francis would retreat to pray. The route takes in some breathtaking views of the whole valley from Perugia to Spoleto.


Your destination is the walled hilltop town of Spello, a former Roman colony, which you will enter by one of its ancient gates. In Spello you can visit the church of Santa Maria Maggiore with its magnificent frescoes by Pinturicchio in the Cappella Baglioni (also known as the Cappella Bella).


Day 3 –Spello to Bevagna –Following the Traces of the Romans  


Today you will leave one former Roman settlement and take a gentle walk to another, the tiny town of Bevagna, one of Umbria’s hidden gems, travelling along the plain of Spoleto past isolated villages and farms.


Day 4 –Bevagna to Montefalco –Through Umbrian Wine Country 


On day four you will travel from Bevagna to Montefalco through the vineyards famous for their Montefalco Sagrantino wine. You can even take time to stop of at some of the local wineries to do some wine tasting!


Known as “the balcony of Umbria” because of the panoramic views it enjoys, although Montefalco is now famous in Italy for its wines it is also home to some important works of art such as the 15th century fresco cycle by Benozzo Gozzoli depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.


Day 5 –Montefalco to Trevi –Along the Ancient Waterways


Today you will descend from Montefalco and follow country paths to the ancient springs near the town of Trevi. The olive oil from Trevi is said to be among the best in Italy and the hills around the town are covered in olive groves.


Day 6 –Trevi to Spoleto –The Olive Grove Path


On this, the last day of your walk, you will arrive at your final destination, the town of Spoleto, entering over the Ponte delle Torri, Spoleto’s striking 13th-century aqueduct: a rewarding end to your week.


In Spoleto you can spend time relaxing in the beautiful piazzas  or visiting the sights, including the Duomo (cathedral), with its frescoes by Pinturicchio and Fra’ Filippo Lippi.


Day 7 -Farewell


Farewell breakfast and check out from your accommodation. Alternatively why not allow yourself a few extra days to take in some more sights in Umbria and Tuscany or spend time relaxing? Let us know and we can discuss options.

The price includes six nights accommodation in carefully selected 4-star hotels and historical residences plus all breakfasts. Your baggage will be transferred daily between hotels. We will provide recommendations for lunch and dinner.


You will be provided with detailed route maps as well as historical and cultural notes for the towns you will visit. On self-guided walks you will have backup from a locally-based English-speaking guide.
