Truffle Hunting Weekend in Umbria Detailed Itinerary:

Friday –Welcome to Truffle Hunting Weekend & Truffle Cooking Lesson

On the first day we can arrange for you to be picked-up at the airport or local train station and taken to your accommodation for the weekend, in the famous truffle area around Spoleto and Norcia. You can choose to stay either at an agriturismo (working farm house) or a lovely Relais.

Following an introduction to the tour over a cup of coffee or aperitivo it is time to roll up your sleeves for a cooking lesson during which you will learn how to prepare truffles and to make dishes such as the local stringozzi pasta which is traditionally enjoyed with truffle sauce.

Saturday –Truffle Hunt & Truffle Lunch

In the morning we will join the truffle hunter and his dogs on their daily truffle hunt in the unspoiled Umbrian forests. There are two main types of truffles (“tartufi” in Italian) to be found in the area: the precious black truffle, Tuber melanosporum (also known as the “Norcia”, “Spoleto” or “Périgord” truffle), which can be found from December to March; and the summer black truffle, Tuber aestivum, which can be found from May until November.

After the truffle hunt, lunch will consist of local salamis and cheeses and truffle dishes prepared using fresh local truffles. The afternoon is free to relax or explore the area around Spoleto and Norcia and do some shopping in the numerous local delicatessens.

We can also organize truffle weekends to coincide with one of the many local gastronomic fairs such as the annual truffle fairs in Norcia in February/March and Gubbio in October/November in which case you could visit the fair this afternoon.

Sunday –Farewell

This morning following a farewell breakfast we can arrange for you to be taken to the airport or local train station. Alternatively why not allow yourself a few extra days to take in some more sights or spend time relaxing?

This tour can also easily be extended by adding one or more of our other tours before or after this tour –see our other Group Tours and Custom Tours. We also run half-day truffle hunting trips in Umbria, Le Marche and Alba in Piedmont throughout most of the year.
