#UmbriaLovers Week – The ultimate Tour of Umbria Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Umbria!

Relax, meet your fellow #UmbriaLovers and Wine Pairing Dinner.

Check into the lovely Agriturismo (working Farmhouse) in the countryside between Spoleto and Montefalco, your home in Umbria for the next 7 nights.

Meet your local Tour Manager and fellow #UmbriaLovers over an aperitif of delicious Umbrian snacks and drinks.

Relax by the pool then get ready for a Welcome Wine Pairing Dinner prepared for us by bubbly Chef Andrea at his Locanda (Inn) nearby.

Day 2 - Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio

Goat Cheese and White Wines.

Today we will visit the ancient city of Orvieto and the car-free village of Civita di Bagnoregio. The area is renowned for its white wines and cheese and we’ll of course be visiting a top Winery and small, family-run Farm for plenty of delicious tastings.

Orvieto, founded around three thousand years ago, was a very important Etruscan city. Orvieto is also famous for its stunning striped Gothic cathedral, one of the most important medieval buildings in Italy, containing “The Last Judgment” fresco by Luca Signorelli. Our tour of Orvieto will also stop by the Pozzo di San Patrizio (Saint Patrick’s Well) where, if you want, you can descend the 248 steps of the double spiral staircase.

Perched on a pinnacle in a grand canyon, the traffic-free village of Civita di Bagnoregio is Italy’s ultimate hilltop town. In the last decade, the old, self-sufficient Civita has died — the last of its lifelong residents have passed on, and the only work here is in serving visitors. But relatives and newcomers are moving in and revitalizing the village, and it remains an amazing place to visit. (It’s even become popular as a backdrop for movies, soap operas, and advertising campaigns.). Civita’s only connection to the world and the town of Bagnoregio is a long pedestrian bridge.

Dinner tonight will be free but with our recommendations.

Day 3 - Spoleto

Pizza Night at the Farmhouse

Private Walking Tour of the atmospheric hilltop town of Spoleto, home to the annual Due Mondi (Two Worlds) Arts Festival. The Walking Tour will lead us through the quaint medieval streets and will take in the main sights of Spoleto, including the Duomo (Cathedral), with frescoes by Pinturicchio and Fra’ Filippo Lippi and the Ponte delle Torri, Spoleto’s striking 13th-century aqueduct. Traditional Umbrian lunch at one of our favourite Trattorias in Spoleto’s city centre.

Afternoon free to relax before our special Pizza night at the Farmhouse!

Day 4 - Assisi Sacred and Profane

Churches, Monasteries and Artisan Beer.

This morning we will head for the city of Assisi, known throughout the world as the birthplace of Saint Francis. We will take a guided walking tour of the city and see the many important sights, including the spectacular Basilica of Saint Francis with its frescoes by Giotto. We will have a unique, craft beer tasting lunch in a special location in the countryside around Assisi, including salamis and hams accompanied by the local Torta al Testo bread. In the afternoon we will visit the Eremo delle Carceri, immersed in the forests of Monte Subasio above Assisi, where Saint Francis and his followers would retreat to pray and the nearby basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli which incorporates the tiny church known as the Porziuncola, where Saint Francis died in 1226.

Dinner tonight will be free but with our recommendations.

Day 5 - Truffle Hunting and Cooking Class

A special excursion followed by a Truffle Cooking Lesson.

We’ll spend the day in beautiful Valnerina, renowned for its Black Truffles. The truffle hunting trip usually lasts for around an hour and a half to two hours. After the truffle hunt, we’ll enjoy a Truffle Cooking Lesson followed by lunch, consisting of local salamis and cheeses and truffle dishes prepared using truffles found by the truffle hunter.

There are two main types of black truffles (“tartufi” in Italian) to be found in central Italy, the precious black truffle, Tuber melanosporum (also known as the “Norcia”, “Spoleto” or “Périgord” truffle), which can be found from November to March and the summer black truffle, Tuber aestivum, which can be found from May until November. Despite the truffle’s reputation as a precious ingredient, it is used extensively in rustic Italian cooking to add a special touch to simple dishes such frittata (a type of omelette) and strangozzi (a local pasta dish).

Relax at the Farmhouse before a special Umbrian Barbeque.

Find out more information on truffles and truffle hunting.

Day 6 - Montefalco and Bevagna

Red Wines and Extra-virgin Olive Oil.

Montefalco Sagrantino is one of only two Umbrian wines to be awarded the prestigious Italian DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita –the highest Italian wine appellation) and the area also produces the excellent Rosso di Montefalco.

This morning, we will depart for the nearby towns of Montefalco and Bevagna for private tours of selected local wineries and wine tastings of the area’s excellent wines, which are considered to be among the best in Italy. Weather permitting we will start the morning with a gentle stroll through the vineyards. Following lunch at a typical local restaurant or at one of the wineries we will also pay a visit to these fine Umbrian towns.  Montefalco, known as “the balcony of Umbria” because of the panoramic views it enjoys, is now famous in Italy for its wines but it is also home to some important works of art, such as the 15th century fresco cycle by Benozzo Gozzoli, depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Bevagna, the Roman “Mevania”, is a true gem that retains some amazing Roman and medieval monuments . If you are taking the Tour in June, you’ll be able to step back in time, during the renowned “Mercato delle Gaite” Festival, a 10-Day re-enactment of everyday life during the Middle Ages.

Day 7 - Perugia and Deruta

Following lunch at a local Osteria, on our way back from Perugia we will stop in the town of Deruta, famous for its maiolica ceramics, where we will visit the studio of a local ceramic artisan.

Truffle “farewell night” in the ‘kitchen” of a Small Truffle Estate to taste Umbria’s most sought after delicacy and celebrate the end of our Tour in authentic Italian Style!

Day 8 - Time to say "Arrivederci"...

This morning unfortunately it is time to say farewell.

We are sure you will head for home with loads of lovely memories and the desire to return to Umbria soon.
